Hello,
I have a few old wakizashi blades (cheap, unpolished) and I'm playing with the idea to make shirasaya or boxes for them to keep them safe till further (professional) restoration.
Can paulownia wood (kiri) be used for it? If it does not harm tsuba and other kodogu it should be sufficient for a steel blade...(?)
Any objections to this idea?

Hi, Andi B,
Usualy, for Shirasaya the best is HO WOOD (Magnolia Abowata) - is traditional japanese staff
for craft Shirasaya.
The Kiri wood usualu use for made boxes for tsuba, f/k, menuki e.t.s. - i'ts very soft wood!

Regards,

Stanley

Thanks Stanley,

yes, I used Kiri for making a scroll box. Kiri wood is available here, so boxes and small chests should be no problem (...I recently bought a band saw ;-)). Unfortunately magnolia is hard to find...

But the more I think about it, for my purposes (unpolished/rusty blades), boxes are better than saya, which couldn't be used after a future restauration.
