I really enjoyed Ikeda sans video the first time I saw it Paul. I thought it showed great skill.

This is my teacher, Izumi Koshiro Sensei, demonstrating classic kata-kiri technique.

The chisel he's using is similar in shape to a woodwork mortice chisel. It's flat and the cutting face is made up of two planes set at about 60degrees to each other. The edge of the chisel is angled into the metal and as it's tapped along it is leaned over to create a wider cut. In this way it simulates ink brush strokes.

The creation of the technique is traditionally credited to Yokoya Somin, 1670-1733.
