A friend has this katana by Hosokawa Tadayoshi, dated 1855 and made by request of Chujo Naomichi retainer of the Sakura han of Soshu.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the mei? Is it possible to trace Naomichi or find any further information on him?
I have seen the article by Toyru on Hosokawa Tadayoshi and it was very helpful.
Thanks,
Peter

Peter - I know that Toryu would love to see more photos of this nakago, especially on a plain background and the whole blade as well. There are a number of other swords in the catalog from which I took my information, several of the oshigata did not scan well so were not included in my article. I would love to help you with your research and I will but I am on the verge of a 6 week trip to Japan myself. Therefore it will have to be after I am returned. In the meantime I should love to see some photos. The strength of the yasuri is impressive, can't wait to see more! -t

Peter -
I owe you an apology, I was in Japan when you posted these and did not see them. I was not subscribed to the thread, actually to any thread. Now I have learned my lesson, including how to subscribe. I look forward to examining your pics, the signature and the oshigata I have on hand. A really exciting piece, I thank you for sharing, -t
