Hello friends,

Most modern Chinese swords are for exhibition only. Many Kung Fu practitioners use flexible swords or other light swords that are easier to spin and are safer for use in Kung Fu exhibitions. Traditional Chinese swords and swordmaking, however, was once a fine craft. Although there are very few people still using traditional manufacturing techniques, these manufacturing techniques resulted in swords that were strong enough for combat and thought to possess their own spirit.

The first step to making a traditional Chinese sword is similar to making any other sword. An alloy of iron and steel must be heated in a kiln to around 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1,300 degrees centigrade. A variety of furnaces can be used, ranging from traditional wood and coal fired furnaces to modern natural gas and electric furnaces. Wood and coal fired furnaces must have air forced into them to allow for more available oxygen for temperatures high enough for softening iron and steel.

Thanks a lot
Daniel Rizzo
